چکیده

We study the net dielectron production rates from an ensemble of thermal mesons, using an effective Lagrangian to model their interaction. The coupling between the electromagnetic and the hadronic sectors is done through the vector meson dominance approach. For the first time, a complete set of light mesons is considered. We include contributions from decays of the type V (PS) → PS (V) + e+ e, where V is a vector meson and PS is a pseudoscalar, as well as those from binary reactions PS + PS, V + V, and V + PS → e+e−. Direct decays of the type V → e+e− are included and shown to be important. We find that the dielectron invariant mass spectrum naturally divides in distinct regions: in the low mass domain the decays from vector and pseudoscalar mesons form the dominant contribution. The pion– pion annihilation and direct decays then pick up and form the leading signal in an invariant mass region that includes the ρ− ω complex and extends up to the φ. Above invariant mass M ≈ 1 GeV other two-body reactions take over as the prominent mechanisms for lepton pair generation. These facts will have quantitative bearing on the eventual identification of the quark–gluon

From Meson-nucleon Scattering to Vector Mesons in Nuclear Matter

We employ meson-nucleon scattering data to deduce the properties of the low-mass vector mesons in nuclear matter, and present results for the ρ and ω in-medium spectral functions. The corresponding thermal emission rate for lepton pairs is also discussed.

Meson-nucleon Scattering and Vector Mesons in Nuclear Matter *

The electromagnetic decay of the vector mesons into e+e− and μ+μ− pairs makes them particularly well suited for exploring the conditions in dense and hot matter in nuclear collisions. The lepton pairs provide virtually undistorted information on the mass distribution of the vector mesons in the medium. The lepton-pair spectrum in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS energies exhibits a low-mass en...

Measuring hadron properties at finite temperature.

We estimate the numbers and mass spectra of observed lepton and kaon pairs produced from φ meson decays in the central rapidity region of an Au+Au collision at lab energy 11.6 GeV/nucleon. The following effects are considered: possible mass shifts, thermal broadening due to collisions with hadronic resonances, and superheating of the resonance gas. Changes in the dilepton mass spectrum may be s...

Photoproduction of electron-positron pairs on the proton in the resonance region

Production of lepton pairs in the γp → e−e+p reaction is studied at photon energies up to 1 GeV. We show that even if lepton charge is not measured there are extensive kinematical regimes where the nuclear process dominates over the Bethe-Heitler contribution. The decomposition is performed of the unpolarized cross section for the virtual Compton scattering in terms of response functions. These...

Summary of Experimental Results: Photons, Leptons and Heavy Quarks

This is a summary of experimental results on photons, leptons, and heavy quarks presented at Quark Matter 2008. A first measurement of the bottom to charm contribution to the lepton spectrum has given experimental indication for the suppression of charm and bottom. Excess dileptons have been observed and studied by both NA60 and PHENIX, which may arise from the early production of thermal dilep...
